The Huckster or the Keyester...
Who's The Bigger Fool For Christ?

With Mike Huckabee's sudden surge in the polls before the Iowa Caucuses, the media wanted to ask the proper question for its reader/viewership. There are many liberals in an agitated state of theocracy-phobia, don't ya know? A reporter asked Gov. Huckabee why he thought there was such a focus on religion in this election cycle. The Huckster said the reason for religion's high profile is because it is the media that keeps probing the issue with the candidates. Instead of embracing his ministry background, and answering the question head-on, he engaged in the word game of a politician. It's as if he was embarrassed. As though he must appear nonchalant in his commitment to Christian ideals because his ordained status may be threatening to non-belieivers.

Conversely, when asked, (and even if not asked) Alan Keyes goes directly toward pointing out that the covenant document on which the Constitution and our government rests, presupposes that some rights can never be taken away by humankind because they were given to us by God. Before the settlers seeking religious freedom even disembarked from their ship, they considered it important to write a covenant document, The Mayflower Compact. Likewise, before the Founding Fathers codified their vision for a new country in the Constitution, they stated in The Declaration of Independence that persons are endowed with God-given unalienable rights.

The STATESMAN, Alan Keyes, does not mince any words with regard as to why God is an integral part of this nation. A theocracy would necessitate the establishment of a state religion. Dr. Keyes rightly corrects those who would pervert the First Amendment to the Constitution, to infer that it is meant to suppress all religion or religious references. So, who would you rather have in the bully pulpit? An ordained minister who dodges the question like a politician, or a Statesman who defends the premise of the Constitution?

Dr. Keyes has been a Pro-Life Activist "on the ground." He has repeatedly said that his first actions as President would be to assure that the pre-born are afforded their Constitutional right of personhood. Contrast that with Mike Huckabee's response at the Values Voters Debate to a question about the Mexico City Policy. The governor answered as if it were a question concerning sovereignty. The best case scenario is that the Huckster was again playing the politician in order to avoid the question. Other explanations aren't even as flattering. Could it be that Mike Huckabee is ignorant of the policy which prohibits funding of abortions in third world countries? Who among us who is involved as a Pro-Life activist has not heard of this crucial use (or misuse) of foreign aid? It's very near to Fred Thompson telling us he's Pro-Life, but revealing that he wasn't all that familiar with the Terri Schiavo case.

How long are Christians going to continue concealing their faith in a "sophisticated" secular, stealth-mode fashion in order to "outwit" the ungodly? Stooping to levels of untruth in order to "put one over" on the other side smacks of a lack of faith. When David met Goliath, his motivation was purely and humbly to defend God's honor. Why must Pro-Life believers resort to backing politicians who feel they must compromise in increments in order to reach a righteous goal?

Aha! I see you started a blog. I'm sorry that your very first comment is from someone who disagrees with you on many levels.
But, there's no enmity here. I'm really glad that we have one more point of view on the blog scene. That's the beauty of the internet!
Anyways, about your post - I really can't say much because I'm not religious. I've effectively replaced my reliance on Christianity with high hopes of answers from Science. Either way, it's all based on "hope" rather than "truth"... innit?
Hoping to hear more from you.
Regards,
Cyriac
