When I seek to do good, my model is Jesus Christ Himself. When Christ feared His own human demise in the Garden at Gethsemane, He ultimately prayed that The Father's Will be done. When He taught us to pray, He encouraged us to say, "Your Kingdom come, Your Will be done, on earth as it is in heaven." When I am fearful, I must be open to God's Will, not according to my human perception or calculation, but trusting that simply seeking the Good will bring about God's Will. In this sense, discernment encompasses all the information that is available, and should not exclude what has already informed my conscience. If I am fearful of the candidate, Obama, and his track record, (and his stated intentions if elected) I certainly must ask myself if this fear is justified, according to my actively formed conscience (an accumulation of judgments toward objective Truth). If, however, I am fearful of the truth that the candidate, Keyes, is proclaiming only because my human perception and calculation tells me that voting for him will result in the greatest evil I can imagine (Obama), am I justified in suppressing or silencing the objective Good that Alan Keyes is championing?
In order to be truly open to God's Will, I must arrive emotionally and intellectually at a place of surrender. I cannot profess to God that His Will be done, if I am still clinging to my human appraisal of the situation. Otherwise, I am making myself God, and limiting Him to the perspective of my human assessment... and therefore MY will. If, in order to further the effect of my human calculations, I endeavor to silence the Good, so that others may not benefit from an informed conscience, I am committing the ultimate act of scandal.
True Faith requires a resignation that God is in charge, even unto determining the moment of my own death. I cannot forsake Good or Truth in order to prolong my own life, or the lives of the pre-born!
